The advisory primarily impacts San Juan County, along with Western Whatcom and Skagit counties, the Admiralty Inlet area, and several cities, including Everett, Bellingham, Mount Vernon, and Port Townsend. As a result of this weather alert, residents are warned to prepare for winds from the south that could reach sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts potentially peaking at 45 mph. Furthermore, localized areas may even experience gusts as high as 50 mph, leading to potential hazards for outdoor activities and infrastructure.
In addition to the previously mentioned counties and cities, the wind advisory also extends to the North Coast, which encompasses communities such as Forks, La Push, and Neah Bay. The wind conditions in these areas are projected to be equally strong and disruptive, posing risks such as downed tree limbs and potential power outages. The impact of the powerful winds is already being felt, as indicated by reports of widespread power outages affecting over 24,000 residents as of shortly after 7 p.m. Friday evening. Clallam County Public Utility District (PUD) reported that more than half of its customers were without power, highlighting the severe impact wind gusts can have on electrical infrastructure. As the evening progressed, by 11 p.m. the number of customers without power decreased significantly to just under 8,000, primarily along the coastal areas where the winds were most intense.
Field reports have confirmed the severity of these weather conditions, with wind gusts recorded at astonishing speeds. For instance, a maximum wind gust of 60 mph was reported at a military base on an island, showcasing the range of wind intensity across the region.
