K9 Bear, a dedicated police canine from the Middletown Police Department in Ohio, has officially retired after an impressive eight years and four months of service. K9 Bear, born on February 2, 2015, joined the police force after being selected as the newest recruit on April 20, 2016. He swiftly graduated from the K9 academy and began his service shortly thereafter, on July 8, 2016, marking the beginning of a prolific career in law enforcement.
Throughout his tenure, K9 Bear showcased exemplary skills, particularly in tracking and narcotics detection. His remarkable capabilities earned him prestigious accolades, including first place in Tracking and Narcotics at the USPCA Region 5 certifications held in Mansfield, Ohio, in 2019. Bear continued to excel, securing seventh place overall in the same category during the 2022 certifications in Middletown, reflecting his consistent performance and dedication to duty over the years.
K9 Bear was an integral part of the Middletown Police Department, participating in over 900 operational deployments. His work included conducting more than 400 free air sniffs, which were instrumental in recovering significant quantities of illegal narcotics. Furthermore, he played a crucial role in various investigative scenarios, including 261 tracking missions and 114 building and area searches. These efforts contributed to the department’s success, leading to 24 physical arrests and assisting in 66 incidents where suspects were located and detained without the necessity of force.
