The House Ethics Committee has released a report detailing serious allegations against former Representative Matt Gaetz, stating that he engaged in illegal drug use, solicited multiple women for sex, and had sexual relations with a 17-year-old during his tenure in Congress. The bipartisan committee reported “substantial evidence” that Gaetz violated numerous House rules as well as state and federal laws regarding prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, and obstruction of Congress. Their investigation, which spanned several years, concluded that he acted unethically while a member of Congress, although the committee was deadlocked on the decision to release the findings until recently. Ultimately, on a secret vote, the committee decided to make the report public.

The report outlines various illegal activities allegedly committed by Gaetz from 2017 to 2020, including the regular payment for sex, which could constitute a violation of Florida’s prostitution laws. The investigation also revealed that Gaetz engaged in sexual encounters with a young woman who was only 17 at the time, violating local statutory rape laws. Interestingly, Gaetz claimed he did not realize her age until more than a month after their initial encounters. Despite this, they continued their relationship, which included further sexual meetings after the individual turned 18. Additionally, the investigation uncovered that Gaetz had been in possession of illegal drugs, namely cocaine and ecstasy, and had improperly accepted gifts exceeding permissible limits during a trip to the Bahamas.

Despite these serious allegations, Gaetz has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Notably, a previous Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking claims against him concluded without any charges being filed. The Department has yet to comment on the recent Ethics Committee findings. Moreover, the committee characterized Gaetz’s behavior as willfully obstructive during their investigation, asserting that his actions reflect discreditably upon the House of Representatives. Although the report indicated that Gaetz caused the transportation of women across state lines for commercial sex, it did not find concrete evidence of violations of federal sex trafficking laws, as none of the individuals involved were found to be minors during transport, nor was there evidence of coercion.

In anticipation of the report’s release, Gaetz attempted to legally obstruct it by filing for a temporary restraining order, claiming that the report’s publication would violate his due process rights. He argued that the committee no longer had jurisdiction over him and maintained that releasing the report was against established committee practices. These claims were made as he sought to defend his actions and integrity in light of the public scrutiny resulting from the committee’s findings. The rare occurrence of an ethics report being published after a former member’s resignation has sparked debates regarding the implications of such transparency, with some arguing it sets a dangerous precedent.

Legal representatives of women who testified against Gaetz expressed satisfaction with the committee’s detailed findings and their commitment to transparency. Testimony from multiple women, supported by corroborating evidence, affirmed their claims and lends credibility to their narratives. Their attorney emphasized that the committee’s findings validated the women’s experiences and contributed to uncovering the truth surrounding Gaetz’s misconduct.

Gaetz’s political career, which once saw him representing Florida’s western panhandle, abruptly ended with his resignation following President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that he might nominate him for attorney general. However, after Senate Republicans expressed concerns about the nomination, Gaetz withdrew shortly thereafter. Following the report’s publication, Rep. Michael Guest, the chair of the House Ethics Committee, criticized the decision to release the findings after Gaetz’s resignation, labeling it a dangerous deviation from the committee’s historical practices and warning of potentially severe consequences for the institution. The situation continues to evolve, with further developments expected in the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Gaetz’s actions and their implications for Congress.
